When you imagine a sliding door – or better yet, when you actually have one, especially a metal aluminium sliding door – you probably think: a robust system, strong, made of metal, so practically nothing can happen to it, right? Well, that is only partly true, because a sliding door – regardless of whether it is made of aluminium or uPVC – also requires maintenance if it is meant to function properly without issues over the long term. On the one hand, it is a kind of window – because even with a low threshold or a threshold hidden in the floor, you still have a frame on all four sides. On the other hand, it is also a kind of door – people constantly walk through it – with all the consequences that come with that. That is why a sliding door requires special maintenance measures.
How to clean the glazing of a sliding door?
Cleaning the glazing of a sliding door is done in the same way as with standard windows: some warm soapy water and a cloth – and everything can be cleaned properly and nicely. In the case of stubborn dirt, the process should simply be repeated. However, there are a few important things to remember when cleaning a sliding door:
- Clean the sliding door in a position where it cannot move – the work becomes easier and faster. The door will not slide away while cleaning – ideally, clean it while it is closed.
- If the glazing is particularly tall – more than two metres high – it is worth choosing a proper step stool instead of a chair or small stool. The advantages are obvious: they offer a larger standing surface and are actually designed for standing, making the work much safer.
- If the sliding door is not protected by a canopy, especially in the case of patio doors, pay special attention to the lower part of the glazing – more dirt and mud may collect there from rain splashes or dirty shoes. Never use abrasive products – instead, simply try again once or twice more with a sponge and a little extra soap or washing-up liquid, and the dirt should come off.
How to clean sliding door frames?
When it comes to the frame, there are practically no differences compared to cleaning a standard window frame – simply wipe it with a cloth and soapy water, and everything should be fine. The same recommendations apply as with cleaning the glazing – use a proper step stool if the glazing is tall, and pay close attention to the lower area – we will come back to that in the next section.
Otherwise, the same rules apply as with windows: uPVC sliding door frames should be cleaned with soapy water and a soft cloth, but the cloth should not have strong colouring, otherwise there is a risk that the colour may transfer onto the plastic. For aluminium sliding door frames, make sure non-alkaline cleaning products are used. And again: do not use abrasive materials or products, as they may cause scratches.
Sliding door mechanism maintenance
We emphasise the word “sliding” here – because it would not be a sliding door if you could not slide it. The core element is the sliding mechanism, which on one hand must be extremely strong – to support the large sash – but on the other hand also requires maintenance. Fortunately, this maintenance is very easy.

“The most important thing is the bottom track. It absolutely must always be kept as clean as possible. That means – no sand, no soil or anything similar, because all of this affects the lifespan of the rollers inside the sash. This applies to every sliding mechanism without exception – lift-and-slide systems, Smart-Slide systems, regardless of the material – aluminium or uPVC – the bottom guide track must always be spotless. If this rule is followed, there should be no problems. If it is neglected, then after just a few years – even after two years – the rollers may simply wear out. They become damaged, they break, because dirt or sand gets inside. This is the most important thing – it has to be monitored. Even if children run around the house, it is hugely worthwhile to vacuum the track regularly – and if you keep doing this, the sliding mechanism will work without any problems.”

So once again: in a sliding system, the bottom track is the most important element responsible for smooth operation. If proper cleaning is neglected, the moving parts begin to wear out, damage occurs and problems appear – and if the guide track becomes damaged due to lack of maintenance, then you no longer really have a functioning sliding door.
Apart from that, everything works like with any other window: clean the mechanical components and use some lubricant for maintenance – our recommendation is twice a year.
