Guide to Velux window sizes: Choosing the right size for Your home

Written by

Reading Time: 6 minutes

With over 80 years’ experience in designing and crafting high-quality roof windows, VELUX transforms spaces into favourite places. VELUX windows bring daylight and fresh air into bedrooms, home offices, kids rooms, living rooms, bathrooms, kitchens and hallways. They help to create a bright, healthy and energy-efficient environment for you and your family to live, work, learn and play.

Whether you are replacing an existing VELUX roof window or installing one for the very first time, finding the perfect size and type for your project can be difficult. To lend you a helping hand, we prepared a handy guide to VELUX window sizes below. We will also help you to decide which skylight type to choose. We hope you will find the VELUX Window Size Chart helpful. In case you have any further questions or look for a local dealer, feel free to contact us. We offer VELUX windows with full guarantee and installation service all over Ireland.

Skylight dimensions: Why is it important to select the right size?

Choosing the right size of a roof window seems to be an easy task. In fact, it is not, especially with so many skylight dimensions and options available. It is easy to make a mistake and select a window which will eventually occur to be too big or too small, too wide or too tall.

The right size of a roof window is incredibly important to the aesthetics and comfort of your home. In case of VELUX roof windows, it is also crucial to decide on the appropriate type of the opening. You can either go for the classic centre-pivot roof window or a larger top-hung roof window designed for easy to reach openings.

How to find the size of your VELUX window?

While installing a window for the very first time gives you a lot of freedom in terms of selecting its size, replacing an existing VELUX window narrows the choice to skylights of the same size. For example, replacing a window described as MK04 (Velux Size Chart) requires a selection of a window with corresponding MK04 code. What is important, the frame style, glazing option and opening type don’t have to necessarily be the same as in the window you are replacing. Just have a quick look at the chart below and you will see what we mean.

Window Size Available Options
MK04 GZL, GZL B, GLL, GLL B,  GLU, GPL, GPU, GGL, GGU
MK06 GZL, GZL B, GLL, GLL B,  GLU, GPL, GPU, GGL, GGU
SK06 GZL, GLL, GPL, GPU, GGL, GGU

The size is only one of the parameters you should take into consideration. Although it’s a crucial one for an existing opening, you still have a plenty of options to choose from. That allows you to select the most convenient skylight for your space and transform it into a comfortable living area.

How do I know the exact size of my window?

To verify the size and type of the existing window, you should find a plate. It won’t be difficult, as every window manufactured after 1968 has it mounted in the top right-hand corner of the frame. The plate includes all the key information about the given window: size, frame style, glazing and opening type. In most cases, this will align with current models, but if not, our team will be able to help you find a suitable replacement unit.

How are VELUX windows measured?

When selecting a VELUX roof window for the very first time, it is important to know how they are measured. In most cases, the size given represents the measurements of the external frame and not the glazed area. What does it mean? The window size is roughly the size of the hole required for its installation. This can vary when you use a flashing kit or insulation collar.

Velux Size Chart

Now when you know how the windows are measured and what dimensions you should be looking at for your dreamt home, it is time to go through the size chart.

The offer also includes other models and possible combinations. For more detailed information, see the size chart here. However, remember that the codes (CK, FK, MK, PK, SK and UK) refer to the dimensions only. There may be additional characters depending upon the size, frame style, glazing option and opening type. Nevertheless, the standard code should always be present.

GGL , GGU, GPL and GPU: What does it mean?

As we have already mentioned, the code defying a certain window type may include additional characters. GGL, GGU, GPL and GPU are markings that refer to:

  • frame styles/finishes,
  • opening types.

GGL and GGU: Centre Pivot Roof Windows

A centre-pivot roof window is a classic solution that perfectly meets the needs of smaller spaces. The window is easy to operate, even with furniture beneath. Moreover, the model is equipped with a top control bar that allows you to install the window lower than an equivalent top-hung operated roof window.

As far as GGL and GGU models are concerned, additional markings in the symbols refer not only to the frame finishes and glazing options, but also to the way the windows are controlled. Centre-pivot roof windows offer three types of control:

  • manual,
  • electric
  • solar powered.

GPL and GPU: Top-hung roof windows

Markings GPL and GPU refer to top-hung roof windows. The markings come with additional numbers that refer to the glazing options:

  • 70 – Comfort,
  • 68 – Better comfort,
  • 66 – Well-being.

Top-hung roof windows are the perfect choice for windows within easy reach. They are operated by a handle at the bottom and open outwards. They can be opened to any position up to 45 degrees, which allows you to take full advantage of uninterrupted views and feeling of extra space. What is more, the windows are easy to maintain. They rotate 180 degrees for easy cleaning from the inside.

GPL as well as GPU windows are available in a wide range of VELUX window sizes. They offer internal finishes and glazing options, with laminated safety glass in standard. Top-hung roof windows are a common choice for modern buildings. The moisture-resistant white polyurethane finish (GPU) makes them ideal for humid rooms as kitchens and bathrooms.

VELUX windows: Make sure you chose the perfect ones for your home

You know how to manoeuvre through the VELUX Size Chart, but deciding on the right size is still a challenge. It does not have to be. To make finding your ideal window size a bit easier, we have prepared some extra tips below.

Where is the window going to be installed?

For rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms, larger roof windows are recommended. They offer better ventilation and thus less condensation build-up. When selecting the window size, you should also consider the comfort of rooms which are the most occupied ones in your home. Dining rooms and living rooms require windows that will bring a lot of natural light in, and at the same time will offer good thermal insulation parameters.

The shape and size of the room

The shape and size of the room is a crucial factor for window size selection. It should determine not only the skylight dimensions, but also the number of windows that are required to achieve optimum comfort limits. The shape of the room will also impact the position of the roof lights, since certain areas may not be easily accessible for the daylight and thus, they may require another window to be fitted.

The outside view

If you are not particularly fond of what you can see outside, you might opt for a smaller roof window. On the other hand, if you do adore the view, you won’t be happy to limit it with narrow skylights. On the contrary, you will be looking for wide VELUX windows that will allow you to appreciate that view better. Another factor is the location of your home. If it is overlooked by neighbouring properties, you may want to increase privacy inside by the shape and size of VELUX roof windows.

We hope you found the tips helpful and now will enjoy selecting VELUX windows for your home even more. VELUX offers high-quality solutions that are built to give you nothing less but the comfort of well-lit and ventilated space with an uninterrupted view.
