How to prepare for window and door installation day?

Reading Time: 6 minutes

Imagine this: your dream windows and doors are on their way, delivery is confirmed, and installation day is getting closer by the minute. Suddenly, you look around your living room and think: “Right… what exactly should I do now?”

Fenbro Specialists hear this question often, and the answer is actually very simple: in order to prepare for window and door installation day, clear the space, protect what matters to you, and make sure the installers can work freely. Preparing for window installation isn’t complicated. You don’t need special tools. You don’t need construction experience. Just a bit of common sense and a little planning ahead. Let’s go through it properly so you feel ready when the fitters arrive.

Easy access is everything

We asked a fitter with years of experience, Marcin Wojtyczko, what really matters on installation day. His answer was straightforward:

“The most important thing? Clear access. If we can reach the window or door easily, the rest is manageable. Just make sure the window isn’t blocked by a bed, a wardrobe or shelves. We’ve seen everything.”

Before the fitting team arrives, walk into each room where windows are being replaced. Look at the space around the window. Can someone comfortably stand there and work? Can they move tools around safely? Beds, wardrobes, tables and small cabinets often sit close to the wall. These need to be moved away. Even pulling furniture 1.5–2 metres back can make a big difference. Window sills should also be completely empty. Plants, decorations, candles, photo frames it all needs to be removed. Not only does this protect your belongings, it also speeds up the work. Access is just as important outside the house. Fitters may need to remove old frames from the exterior. Make sure there are no bins, garden chairs, flower pots or obstacles under the windows. Clear space allows the team to work safely and efficiently. It may sound basic, but this is the most important part of preparing for new window installation.

Will there be dust during window installation?

Many people hope window replacement will be clean and quiet. In reality, it is controlled work, but not dust-free.

Old frames must be removed. Sometimes small parts of plaster or trim need adjustment. Even with care and experience, some dust is unavoidable. Professional fitters protect floors and large furniture. They typically bring dust sheets and protective materials. After the job is complete, they clean up the work area. However, if you own valuable items or delicate decorations, it’s a good idea to protect them yourself as well. Cover sofas if you prefer extra peace of mind. Move expensive electronics to another room. Store fragile items safely for the day. Marcin puts it simply:

“The more a client protects in advance, the easier the day is for everyone.”

You’re not preparing for chaos. Just for a bit of mess, which is totally normal. Wondering what to expect after window and door installation is completed? Check the article we prepared.

Remove blinds, curtains and alarm sensors

This is something many homeowners forget.

Before window installation day, remove curtains, curtain rails, blinds and any window-mounted accessories. This gives installers clear space to work from the beginning. Alarm sensors are especially important. If you have contact sensors attached to window frames, they should be removed in advance if possible. Fitters can usually take them off if needed. But there is a high chance they will not reconnect alarm systems after installation. Most of them are not alarm specialists, and reconnecting them could create future technical issues. It’s always safer for you to organise alarm reinstallation separately once the new windows are fully fitted and sealed.

Do I need to move my car on installation day?

On installation day, the team will arrive with tools, materials and replacement units. Easy access to your driveway helps the process run smoothly.

If possible, repark your car away from the house. This is not about expecting damage. It’s purely a precaution. During removal of old frames and glass, small pieces can occasionally fall. Keeping your vehicle at a safe distance removes that risk completely.Clear parking also allows installers to unload efficiently and reduces the amount of carrying heavy materials across long distances. Less carrying means safer and faster work.

How does installation work in a two-storey house?

If you’ve got a two-storey house, don’t overcomplicate it. Just ask the installers how they usually run it.

Most teams will say the same thing: let’s not do the whole house at once. It’s much easier to finish one floor properly and then move on to the next.  As Marcin Wojtyczko, a fitter working across Ireland sums it up:

“In a two-storey house, we usually say: upstairs is ours today, downstairs is yours. Tomorrow we switch.”

So for example, they might do all the upstairs windows on day one. That way, you still have your ground floor more or less usable. The next day, they switch. Downstairs becomes the work zone, upstairs is yours. It sounds basic, but it really helps. You’re not stepping around tools in every room. You’re not wondering where you’re supposed to sit or make a cup of tea. Just have that quick conversation before they start. “How are we splitting this?” That’s it. Once you know the plan, the whole thing feels a lot more manageable.

Is it safe to stay at home during installation?

Window replacement involves sharp tools, glass and constant movement in and out of rooms. That is why safety needs to be at the forefront of your mind in this situation.  If you have children, make sure they understand which areas are temporary work zones. Pets should be kept inside or outside in a safe space until installation is complete. Fitters move quickly and need to focus. A calm environment benefits everyone.

Conclusion

The day of installation is not something to worry about. You should just create some space in your home for the team to work and move or cover the items that are most important to you. It may be a bit chaotic and loud, but this short disruption will provide you with long-term comfort.A little time spent preparing the day before will allow you to feel much less anxious when the fitting team arrives. FAQ: How to prepare your home for window replacement

How to prepare for new window installation?

Start by clearing access to every window being replaced. Move furniture away from the walls, remove items from window sills and take down curtains or blinds. Make sure fitters can reach both the inside and outside of the window easily.

Is there much mess during window fitting?

There is normally some dust created from the old frames being taken out. A professional fitting team should protect floors and large pieces of furniture; however, we do recommend that you make every effort to cover or move anything that is important to you.

Can I stay at home during window installation?

Yes, you can. Just be prepared for some noise and temporary disruption. If you live in a two-storey house, the work can be done floor by floor to make things easier for you.

How long does window installation usually take?

It depends on the size of the project. Replacing a few windows may take one day, while a full-house replacement can take several days.

Do I need to prepare anything outside the house?

It’s helpful to clear the space under the windows and remove anything that might block access from outside. Move away garden furniture, plant pots or bins. It’s also a good idea to park your car a little further from the house.

Should I remove curtains and blinds before window installation?

Yes, it’s best to remove curtains, blinds and anything mounted directly around the window before the fitters arrive.

Should window sills be clear before fitting day?

Yes. Window sills should be completely clear before fitters arrive. Remove plants, decorations and other items so nothing gets damaged and the team has easy access to the window.
